How to get to the BVI from the UK?

Getting from the UK to the British Virgin Islands has never been easier, find out about the most recent flight options opening up your Caribbean sailing holiday options like never before.

Reaching a sailor’s paradise traditionally required you to make some worthy sacrifices to your time and comfort, with long flight times, bad connections and laid back local airlines with flexible definitions of punctuality, liable to get us hot under the collar.

Historically this would have been true for UK sailors heading out to the British Virgin Islands but read on to find out how you can now be a little less Richard from Woking and a little more Richard Branson and focus on the thing that matters most, getting to your yacht as quickly and comfortably as possible before setting sail.

Transatlantic flight options from the UK to the BVI

There are no direct flights from the UK to the British Virgin Islands but the easiest way to get there is to fly from London Gatwick with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic to Antigua, and catch a connecting flight from there to Tortola (Beef Island Airport EIS).

Antigua to Tortola flight options:

There are now more options than ever, so you can pick the airline and flight times to suit you.

  • InterCaribbean – A direct service which is proving popular amongst our guests, these flights typically arrive into Tortola in the early evening, giving you time to grab dinner and settle aboard your yacht on the first evening.

  • VI Airlink – A direct service which connects with both Virgin Atlantic and BA on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Jump the queues in Antigua, board your flight swiftly and arrive at the base for dinner and a cocktail.

  • LIAT – A non-direct service which stops in St Martin and St Kitts before arriving in Tortola. An option for those looking to spend a little less on their connecting flight.

  • Island Birds – A first class private air charter which is usually more expensive, perfect however for those looking for the VIP treatment and to fly independently with just your crew.

Getting to the BVI from the US mainland.

Fly into St. Thomas airport (STT) in the U.S. Virgin Islands, then take a 10-minute taxi to Charlotte Amalie ferry dock. From there, you’ll hop on the Road Town Fast Ferry and enjoy a 1-hour scenic ride over to Road Town, Tortola. The ferry runs regularly but the last departure each day is usually around 4:30PM, so you’ll need to check the Charlotte Amalie to Road Town ferry schedule and be sure you choose a flight that is scheduled to arrive at least 1.5 hours prior to the ferry departure. Upon arrival in Road Town, the charter base is located a short 5-minute taxi ride away.

UK citizens need also remember to check the latest travel information and visa requirements with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office when planning to travel from or via the US mainland.
